Obituary of Frederick Hartwell Sawyers II (January 16, 1931 to September 10, 2020)

Frederick Hartwell Sawyers II peacefully went to be with his Lord and Savior on September 10, 2020, at eighty-nine (89) years of age, with his loving wife and daughter at his side at TJ Samson Community Hospital in Glasgow, Kentucky.  Frederick is survived by his loving and devoted wife of over sixty-five (65) years, Mary Agnes Rector Sawyers, and his only daughter, Jacqueline Sue Sawyers, of Villa Hills, Kentucky.  He is also survived by five sisters who were all so precious to him, namely, Mary Ann Britton of Conway, Arkansas and formerly of Louisville, Kentucky; Margaret Harbin of Louisville, Kentucky; Shirley Aebersold of Brandenburg, Kentucky; Gaye Campbell of Irmo, South Carolina; and Charlene Bolton of Lindale, Georgia. He is also survived by thirteen dear nieces and nephews, namely, Jeffrey Martin Cross, Dottie Lynn Cross, Kent Britton, Carol Britton, Jayne Harbin, Eric Harbin, Patricia Sawyers, Doug Aebersold, Rhonda Aebersold, Susan Campbell, Chris Campbell, Rick Bolton and Brian Bolton, and a host of very special great-nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews too many to mention by name, all of whom loved him dearly as did he them.  Frederick had many cousins and other relatives and many, many friends who will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents, the late Charles and Pauline Hay Sawyers, his brother, the late Richard “Dickie” Sawyers, his sister, the late Virginia Sawyers LaCaillade, his sister, the late Betty Sawyers Cross Riddle, and his nephew, Michael Aebersold.

Anyone who had the privilege of knowing Frederick knows he was a special man.   Frederick was the epitome of a “family” man and lived for his family.  His family always came first in his life, and his family was the focus of everything he did from the time he was a young man until the day he left this earth.   He had the good fortune of living on his family farm in the home in which he and his siblings grew up until his last days, and he loved his home and the generations of memories there. Frederick was named after his grandfather and was always proud to say his name was Frederick Hartwell Sawyers II.

Frederick loved to work.  He was a farmer at heart and by trade until he took his last breath, and as with most true farmers, he could fix or build virtually anything.   He was also in the trucking business for many years.  His most recent employment was driving a truck for Porco delivering propane and spreading fertilizer.  He loved his work with Porco and the people he met along the way.   He was still working at that job with Porco and had his haz-mat license at eighty-five years old when he had a stroke and could no longer work, and he still talked about it fondly as if he were still working there in the days prior to his death.

Frederick loved people and being around people.   He had the gift of “gab” and could literally talk to a stranger, and typically did so.   And, when he would leave that stranger, they felt like an old friend.

Frederick served in the United States Army having served in the Korean War following his graduation from high school in 1950.   He loved his country and was proud of his service in the military.  And, he loved the American flag and the freedom for which it stands.  Only a few days prior to his recent illness, he and Jackie ceremoniously folded a retired flag together with tears in their eyes.  He was also member of the Albany Masonic Lodge and was proud to be a Mason.

Family and friends are welcome to pay their respects to Frederick at a visitation at Talbott Funeral Home in Albany, Kentucky, on Sunday, September 13, 2020, from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. CDT.  (Family may visit at 2:00 p.m.)  A funeral service to celebrate the life of Frederick will be on Monday, September 14, 2020, at 11:00 a.m. CDT, at the Albany First Baptist Church, in Albany, Kentucky, and he will be laid to rest in his final resting place next to his parents in the Albany Cemetery immediately following the service.  The family recognizes that due to the global health pandemic some who would like to pay their respects will be unable to attend, and the family knows for those of you in that position you are there with them in spirit.
